Reserves are materials set aside by the Library for easy access by students in support of specific courses.
These can be in either digital or physical form:
eReserves: Electronic materials, such as chapters or journal articles, available to students as supplementary course readings.
In-library Reserves: Physical materials (books, DVDs, etc.) available for short-term use in the library, typically for 3-hour loan periods.
Here are a few key points for faculty to keep in mind when using the Library’s Reserves:
The Library accepts print copies of required books as donations and will process them to place on reserve.
Faculty may request the purchase of print books based on availability and cost considerations detailed in our policy.
We encourage faculty to consider using Open Educational Resources (OER) or utilize eReserves whenever possible to help reduce costs for students.
The library’s reserves policy supports the college curriculum in a sustainable way. We acquire books based on availability and will opt for the electronic format when available. We also consider the cost of books before making a purchase.
Students overwhelmingly prefer course readings in e-format, and we strive to fulfill these preferences. However, more publishers are restricting libraries from purchasing e-versions of textbooks and are offering direct e-loans to individual students instead. Some publishers may provide faculty with access to e-texts for a class, but the library will not be provided access. Faculty must arrange these materials directly with the publisher or through the bookstore.
Due to limited staff resources, Library staff do not make photocopies.
Faculty requiring multiple copies of materials are directed to the Print Shop in the basement of Haaren Hall.
