(Too much work? It's much easier to read the ebook is to [[read it online|(Ebsco) Read online]] or [[download a chapter as a PDF|(Ebsco) Download a chapter]].)You need a special ebooks app to read ebooks from this provider. Ebsco recommends their own ebook reader, the EBSCO Ebooks app, available for iOS or Android. We prefer **Bluefire Reader**, also in both app stores.
Find the app in the app store and download it (free). Then you'll see that it asks for an Adobe ID login, explained on the next page.
[[Next|(Ebsco) Sign into Bluefire Reader with an Adobe ID]]Some ebooks only let you download a limited number of pages, e.g., 40 pages. If you need to print more than 40 pages of the book, this might help.
Some ebooks have one or two options: EPUB and/or PDF view.
<img src="ebooks/ebsco_epub-button.png" style="height:50px;width:auto" alt="EPUB full text"/> <img src="ebooks/ebsco_pdf-button.png" style="height:50px;width:auto" alt="PDF full text"/>
With a PDF, you are just printing page scans. 40 printed PDF pages = 40 pages of the actual book.
With EPUB, the text displays like it's a webpage. Each printed page is like a letter-size document, larger than an actual book page. In one test we did, 40 printed EPUB pages = *about 80 pages* of the actual book.
So try choosing EPUB instead. Or try both.
[[Back|Click Save Pages]]Some ebooks don't let you download any pages, like this one:
<img src="ebooks/ebsco_save-pages_0.png" style="height:300px;width:auto" alt="Save pages"/>
In that case, you will just have to [[read it online|(Ebsco) Read online]].You need an ebook app to open the file. We recommend [[Bluefire Reader|(Ebsco) Open file in Bluefire]], which we'll use in this tutorial. (Kindle will not work.)
If you already have an ebook app on your phone, you'll see a screen like this:
<img src="ebooks/ebsco_phone_file.png" alt="Download .ACSM file, open in Bluefire?" style="height:400px;width:auto"/>
If you see the above screen, proceed to this step: [[Open ebook in Bluefire]]

<a href="https://www.lib.jjay.cuny.edu/">Go back to the Library homepage</a>Springer ebooks can be downloaded as ePub files without expiration dates. ePub is a good option if you want to read on a mobile device because you can resize the font (unlike a PDF).
ePub files must be opened with ebook software, like **iBooks** (but not Kindle).
On a Mac computer, for instance, the downloaded ebook would look like this in iBooks:
<img src="ebooks/springer_ibooks.png" style="width:400px;height:auto" alt="Book open in software"/>
On a smartphone, you can open ePubs in an app like iBooks by first choosing how to open the .epub file. For example, on an iPhone, tap the button on the lower left:
<img src="ebooks/springer_epub-mobile.png" style="width:300px;height:auto" alt="Open in..."/>
Then choose an app like iBooks:
<img src="ebooks/springer_epub-open.png" style="width:300px;height:auto" alt="Open in iBooks"/>
Then enjoy your reading!

<img src="ebooks/acls_page.png" style="height:450px;width:auto" alt="Page with forward and back buttons"/>
To read this ebook, you'll have to page through it, one page at a time, with the **Prev** and **Next** buttons above the page image.

<a href="https://www.lib.jjay.cuny.edu/">Go back to the Library homepage</a>In this ebook, you can only download 10 pages at a time.
Click the **PDF** button to the upper left of the book's page. You'll see an option to download a 10-page excerpt, like this:
<img src="ebooks/acls_pdf.png" alt="Download 10-page PDF excerpt"/>
The 10-page count will start at the page you are currently on.
You can open the downloaded PDF immediately and use for your own academic purposes (email to yourself, print it, save to your computer, etc.).
<hr/>
Why just 10 pages at a time? From the ebook provider's <a href="http://www.humanitiesebook.org/help/" target="_blank" title="Opens in new window">FAQ page</a>: "Ten pages may be downloaded or printed at a time. This is generally sufficient for following a citation or extracting a quotation and follows HEB’s policy for fair-use rights and limitations."

<a href="https://www.lib.jjay.cuny.edu/">Go back to the Library homepage</a>Click the **Text** button to the upper left of the page image. Instead of the page image, it will display the plain-text of the page, like this:

Now you can copy and paste a portion of the text from that page.<img src="ebooks/psyc_chapter_pdf-button.png" style="height:300px;width:auto" alt="PDF full text button beneath chapter title"/>
Select **PDF Full Text** to view the chapter.
<img src="ebooks/psyc_chapter-view.png" style="height:400px;width:auto" alt="Page of chapter displayed"/>
From there, you can download the chapter as a PDF and use for your own academic purposes: print it, email it, etc. (To download the PDF, you may have to hover your mouse over the page image to bring up the download option.)

<a href="https://www.lib.jjay.cuny.edu/">Go back to the Library homepage</a>Look through the chapter you just downloaded. Does it cite sources? Example:
<img src="ebooks/endnote.png" alt="Superscript '26' after a sentence" style="height:52px;width:auto;border:1px solid silver"/>
If there's a corresponding citation at the bottom of the page, you're fine. Enjoy your reading!
But if there aren't, your book has **endnotes**. Check to see if the endnotes were included at the end of the chapter you just downloaded:
- They're there? You're fine! Enjoy your reading.
- Not there? Keep going.
[[Next|(ProQuest) Download endnotes]]This is the last step, promise!
You have to downlod the book's endnotes as well so that you have the citations for the sources referenced in the chapter.
From the Table of Contents, the endnotes / references / sources cited chapter might look like this:
<img src="ebooks/ebrary_endnotes.png" alt="Notes, pages 291-350; 60 pages" style="height:70px;width:auto;border:1px solid silver"/>
Go ahead and Download PDF, following the steps we just took to download the chapter.
If you're close to your page limit, follow the instructions to "Download a page range in the online Reader," and just download the page range containing your chapter's endnotes.
Got the notes? Phew! *Now* you can go enjoy your reading.
<hr/>
*End*
<a href="https://www.lib.jjay.cuny.edu/">Go back to the Library homepage</a>To download a **page range**, start reading the chapter/book online.
Click the PDF button at the top:
<img src="ebooks/ebrary_page_pdf.png" alt="PDF button highlighted" style="height:400px;width:auto"/>
You'll get a window like this:
<img src="ebooks/ebrary_chapter-page-download.png" alt="Page range: X to X, or Download Current Chapter" style="height:350px;width:auto;border:1px solid silver"/>
Select a page range. For example, you could choose part of a chapter or two short chapters.
Note: Some ebooks have a **maximum limit** of downloadable pages. In the example above, we're limited to 138 pages. For chapters that exceed 138 pages, we would have to download the first 138 pages and read the rest online, or pick and choose which pages to download.
